Mendon/Southbridge: John M. "Jack" Curboy, 70, of Hastings St., formerly of Southbridge, died Wednesday, Jan. 25th, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Worcester, after a brief illness.
He leaves a son, John M. Curboy, Jr. of Milford; two daughters, Elizabeth M. Curboy of Montgomery, VT and Michaela J. McCoy of Shelton, WA; three brothers, William P. Curboy, II of Southbridge, Martin R. Curboy of Southbridge and Stuart J. Curboy of Holland; two sisters, Imelda E. Lundstrom of Southbridge and Deborah M. Cote of Warren; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Southbridge the son of William P. and Marguerite L. (Chabot) Curboy. He was a graduate of Nasson College in Springdale, ME.
John's long career as an educator began in Limerick, ME, where he both taught and served as Principal for four years. He then became a history teacher in Holliston, MA. He admirably served the students and their families in Holliston by teaching history and being class advisor to several classes in his 41 year career before retiring in 2003. His true calling was being with the kids, always advocating for their benefit. He patrolled lunch halls, chaperoned student functions and conducted after school detention with such a sense of humor and flair for the unique that former students frequently approached him with stories of their escapades when they were students. Many recall getting a "bouquet" given to them for uttering an unacceptable word. Each finger represented an additional day in detention for each letter extended in the "bouquet".
Many students recall the sights and experiences of their trips to Europe during April vacations organized and led by Mr. Curboy. Over the years nearly 500 kids toured European countries under his guidance.
Jack, a name he used in his commercial Cap' N Jack salt water lure business, always had unique nickname for each student and only permitted them to refer to him as Cap' N Jack after they graduated. He kept in touch with several hundred on his Facebook page. Often he would ask others, "Do you remember……? He/she was the kid from…" he would then launch into a short tale of the adventure.
His funeral will be held on Monday, Jan. 30th, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, with a Mass at 10:00am in St. Mary's Church of Blessed John Paul II Parish, 267 Hamilton St., Southbridge. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Southbridge, will be held at the convenience of the family. Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Sunday, Jan. 29th, from 4:00 to 7:00pm.
