Born in Worcester on April 26, 1936 to Emile and Rita (Richards), George was a lifelong resident of Southbridge. George owned and operated several businesses in his lifetime including Five Acre Farm and Greenhouse, and The Pine Shop where he created and sold fine handmade furniture. As a carpenter contractor he was also responsible for the construction of several homes and many renovations in the Southbridge area. Though woodworking was his passion, he was often found working in his woodshop until the wee hours, he also loved animals, spending several years managing a local thoroughbred horse farm.
Always cheerful and generous, George was quick with a joke and always available to help anyone who asked. George was well known for his services to the town of Southbridge. He spent forty-three years on the Southbridge Conservation Commission and was one of the original founding members. Over the years George was also on the Agricultural Committee and volunteered for a variety of behind the scenes tasks around town. In April 2011 the Southbridge Town Council formally recognized George for his outstanding lifelong service with a special award. George could not have been more proud than The Southbridge Evening News reported on the award, dubbing him “Mr. Southbridge”!
