Obituary

Charlton: Anna M. Martel, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 19, at Overlook Masonic Healthcare Center in Charlton, following a long illness.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie B. Martel, who passed away in 1994. She leaves behind her loving family: her son, Christopher Martel and his wife, Jean, of Newburyport; her daughters, Roslyn Nevue and her husband, Patrick, of Brookfield, and Lonnie Kelly and her husband, David, of Athol, Idaho. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Ashley, Sierra, Jessica, Josh, Logan, and Sawyer, and was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense happiness and pride.

Born in Malone, New York, Anna was the daughter of Hugh and Anna (Recore) Lamica. She proudly served her country as a member of the United States Army during the period between the Korean and Vietnam War eras, carrying throughout her life the values of dedication, resilience, and service.

After her military service, Anna married and devoted herself to raising her family. She cherished her role as a mother and created a home filled with love, support, and encouragement. No matter how busy life became, she always made time for her children, and they will remember her as a wonderful and devoted mom whose love and guidance helped shape their lives.

When her children were older, Anna began a successful career as a hairdresser. She worked at Alan's Salon, Mr. Marshall's Salon, and Marlene's Salon, where she became known not only for her skill and professionalism but also for the warmth and kindness she shared with her clients and colleagues. She retired in 2001 following a stroke.

Anna's greatest joy was her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who found happiness in the everyday moments spent with those she loved. Her gentle spirit, caring nature, and quiet strength touched the lives of many. Even after the stroke that limited her mobility and speech, the happiness she expressed when surrounded by family and friends was unmistakable and brought joy to those fortunate enough to share those moments with her.

She also had a special place in her heart for animals, especially dogs. They brought her endless joy and companionship, and her compassion for them reflected the kindness she showed throughout her life. Her love for animals was just one of the many qualities that made her so special.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Overlook Masonic Healthcare Center for the exceptional care, compassion, and dignity they provided to Anna throughout her time there.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Publick House in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, on Sunday, November 8, at 11:00 a.m. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Anna's memory to Second Chance Animal Services, 111 Young Rd., East Brookfield, MA 01515 or online at

Anna will be remembered for her loving heart, unwavering devotion to her family, her service to her country, and the kindness she freely shared with all who knew her. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
