Sturbridge

Obituary

Sturbridge : In the quiet, early morning hours of her youngest daughter's birthday, Carol, 73, lost her battle with cancer. She was at home in Sturbridge with her person, Alice Keith, and their 2 feline fur-babies Mokka and Ragnar.

Carol was born in Southbridge to the late Leo A. Lataille and Ella B. (Tinker) Lataille.

She married Gerard R. Poitras in 1969 and had 2 daughters. Though the marriage was short-lived they maintained an amicable relationship until his death in 2018, one year after the death of her son-in-law, Timothy L. Hunt. Her daughter Kimberly A. Hunt currently resides in Charlton with her sister Kelly M. Lowell, Kelly's husband, Quentin D. Lowell and Carol's youngest grandson, Zakkary S. Surprenant. Her other grandson Shawn A. Surprenant lives in Ct. with his fiancé, Audrey Lynn and her son, Leo. She leaves behind her older brother, Lee Lataille, also of Sturbridge, his children, Lee Jr., Michael and Aundrea and Michael's children, Gavin and Amber. She lost her sister-in-law, Patsy, in 2020.

She was as close to Allie's children Roger Benson and Chrissy Fleury as she was with her own and thought of Allie's grandchildren and great-grandchildren as her own.

School wasn't really her thing and she dropped out of high school as a freshman but she worked hard to obtain her GED many years later and eventually completed EMT and CNA training as well. Although she never became an EMT she would eventually work as both a CNA and a Home Health Aide. She was a phenomenal caregiver and truly enjoyed this work however she was known to us all as a "jack of all, master of none". She was an extremely hard worker who held many jobs through the years including but not limited to property maintenance, housekeeping, supervising a small commercial kitchen and machine operator. She excelled at everything she tried her hand at.

She also excelled at making friends and had an innate ability to attract people to her.  She had an infectious personality and a fabulous sense of adventure. She was willing to try almost anything at least once and usually had great fun and success...except for the time she tried waterskiing...not good! She never stopped though. She was always doing something especially if it was done outdoors. Fishing, hiking, camping, skiing, snowmobiling, gardening. She loved it all. She took up painting, mostly landscapes, somewhere in the middle and of course was great at that as well. She especially loved music and dancing and took great joy in embarrassing all of us by doing it in public frequently. She did everything like no one was watching even though everyone was because she was one of those people that everyone was drawn to, that everyone loved.

There's no way in this small amount of space to truly explain what a wonderful, extraordinary person Carol was and to share all of the different ways that she was so special to so many of us. She loved life and she wasn't ready to go. She loved us. We loved her and will miss her inexplicably for the rest of our days.

Carol's services will be private.  There are no calling hours.
