Obituary

Charlton: Cheryl A. (Londergan) Barber, 63, of Park Rd., passed away at home on Saturday September 6th, with her loving husband by her side.

She was born and raised in Worcester, MA, a graduate of South High School. She was 16 years old when she met the love of her life, and after marrying him in 1983, she moved to Charlton and has made her home there, near her beloved Glen Echo Lake, ever since.

Cheryl leaves behind her devoted husband of 42 years, Tom Barber of Charlton; her mother, Carol McGuiness of Worcester; her four sisters, Suzanne Longone and her husband Joseph of Worcester, Patricia Goodell and her husband James of Oxford, Cathleen Sullivan and her husband William of Brookfield and Laurie Miller and her husband James of Worcester; her two brothers, David Londergan of Worcester and William McGuiness, Jr. and his wife Colleen of Brookfield; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norman and Libby Barber of Charlton; and her 13 nieces and nephews, Benjamin Goodell, Aaron Goodell, Abigail Goodell, Noah Sullivan, Adam Sullivan, Nicole Londergan, Taylor Londergan, Emilie McGuiness, Erynne McGuiness, Collin McGuiness, David Morrison, August Miller and Wesley Miller.

In addition to family, she leaves behind many lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by her stepfather, William McGuiness.  Cheryl was born in Worcester the daughter of the late Arthur Londergan.

Cheryl was the epitome of "work hard, play hard". She attended the New England Banking Institute, and graduated from the Massachusetts School for Financial Studies at Babson College. She started her banking career as a teller at Bank of New England in 1982 and worked her way through the ranks at Leicester Savings Bank and other institutions, ultimately being named Vice President of Consumer Lending at Country Bank through excellence, determination, and hard work. She was a member of the Leicester Business Association and the Chamber of Commerce, earning the respect of her colleagues and the greater community.  When she took an early retirement from banking, she decided to get her real estate license and started a new career as a real estate agent at 1 Worcester Homes. She immediately won the trust of her clients and colleagues. In her first year in Real Estate, she met her company's cap and was named Rookie Of The Year. Cheryl was driven to success, and achieved that in every area of her life, both professional and personal.

Cheryl loved to be active. She loved to snow ski at Sunday River, she was an avid golfer and water skier. She skied from the beginning to the end of every summer on Glen Echo Lake, and at times was a member of various ski clubs both close to home and in other states. Cheryl loved to travel with her husband, and they took many trips and cruises over the years. She loved to create her own adventure, but she was also always up to join someone else's. If you needed a partner, Cheryl was there! She did big things like competing in a triathlon with her sister in law and flying to the Grand Canyon with her brother. But she did the little things too, like taking craft classes, trying out new restaurants, and jumping out of the hot tub to make snow angels. She wanted everyone to experience life to the fullest, and if you needed a partner, she was always a willing companion!

Cheryl was born the day before her mother's 20th birthday. She was her mom's birthday gift, and she was truly a gift to everyone who knew her. She was generous and helpful in the best ways. I don't think she ever said "how can I help?" or "let me know what I can do" she just saw a need and decided to fill it. She wouldn't put you in a position of having to ask, she just took action. Every time. She didn't ask for permission or gratitude, she just did what she could.

Cheryl had a natural ability to engage with others. That's why she was so loved and why she will be so missed. She enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews and really connected with them individually, especially as they got older. She spoiled the little ones with donut holes in an effort to be known as "Auntie Munchkin". She easily related to colleagues and clients, and was loyal to those she loved. Cheryl had many close friendships that have spanned decades. In the last year, she began attending a bible study where she made new friends, and was very proud to become a member of Greenville Baptist Church earlier this year.

Cheryl was strong, and she was a fighter. She survived a brain aneurysm at 18 years old and fought through surgery and therapies to take her life back. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and fought through treatments until she was declared cancer free. She was cancer free for over 10 years before her most recent diagnosis, and she didn't let that stop her either. She pursued treatments while also determining to live every day to the fullest.

Cheryl was a stunning beauty both inside and out. She was ambitious, charismatic, intelligent, vibrant, passionate, and sentimental. She loved people, the beach, dogs, her family, beautiful things and her husband most of all. She built herself a life that she loved, and she lived it to the fullest. It wasn't long enough, but she truly filled it with the good stuff.

A Celebration of Life for Cheryl will be held at a later date.  There are no calling hours.
