Sturbridge: Eugene David Mattioli, Jr., 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, Nov. 29th, in his home after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Marcia S. (Dionne) Mattioli; his two sons, Christopher D. Mattioli and his wife Barbara of Beaufort, SC and David M. Mattioli of Woodstock, CT; his three daughters, Deborah Ryan and her husband Christopher of Burlington, MA, Karen Day of Tewksbury, MA and Stacy A. Courtney and her fiancé William Gaudette of Sturbridge; 15 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara E. Harrington.  David was born in Medford the son of Eugene D. and Doris E. (White) Mattioli, Sr.  He received his bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from UMass Boston.

David was a Captain with the Massachusetts State Police, retiring after 23 years of service. He was extremely proud of the Massachusetts State Police agency.  After retiring, David worked in fraud protection for Shawmut Bank and later Fleet Bank for 10 years before retiring permanently.  David and Marcia loved to travel to the Caribbean, especially to St. Maarten. He enjoyed spending Tuesday evenings with longtime friends at Uno's.  Above all he loved to spend time with his family.

Calling hours for David will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 6th, from 5:00 to 7:00pm in the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge.  Funeral services and burial will be private.
