Obituary

Southbridge: Josephine A. (Milas) Kulis, 95, formerly of Southbridge, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 19 th , in the Webster Manor Nursing Home, Webster, where she resided for several years. Josephine was born in Webster, the daughter of John and Bernice (Pogoda) Milas. She was the wife of the late Mario W. Kulis. Josephine worked in the Administration Office of the American Optical Co. in Southbridge for over 25 years, retiring many years ago.  She was a member of the former St. Hedwig's Parish in Southbridge and its Holy Rosary Sodality.

Josephine leaves her son, Michael J. Andrews-Kulis and his wife Mary Ellen of Elon, NC; her three daughters, Patricia K. Beauchemin and her husband Bernard of Seekonk, MA; Diane K. Barker and her husband Robert of Amesbury, MA; and Karen J. Hayes of Hadley, MA; her seven grandchildren, Mary K. Andrews-Kulis, John W. Andrews and his wife Gina, Michael J. Beauchemin and his wife Andrea Courtemanche, Molly E. Beauchemin and her husband Rishi Singh, Brian P. Hayes and his girlfriend Olivia Skalski, Amanda J. Graham and Chase B. Whatley; her three great grandchildren, Noah Green, Benjamin Beauchemin and Olive Andrews; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Louis Milas and her three sisters, Anne Gray, Helen Mongeau and Frances Duszlak.

Josephine had a love of learning, a trait that she instilled in her children. She understood the importance of education and was very proud that all of her children achieved degrees as first generation college students. She loved to walk, and could be seen making her way through town or around Oak Ridge Cemetery, getting  her daily exercise. She enjoyed meeting friends for lunch at the former Friendly's restaurant, Billis diner or Elm Street Cafe. An avid reader, her frequent forays into town included regular visits to the town library where she would spend time reading and selecting her next book. She challenged her intellect through the acquisition of knowledge at the library and in many other ways including frequent discussions with her family about the latest news and sharing the current Word Power vocabulary quiz from the Reader's Digest magazine. She enjoyed trips to the beach and spending time with her children, grandchildren and extended family.

Her funeral will be private, with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Southbridge. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Donations in Josephine's memory may be made to the Jacob Edwards Library, 236 Main St., Southbridge, MA 01550.
