Obituary

Sharon, VT: Leon Sheldon, 93, formerly of Sharon, VT and Leominster, MA, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2026. Born on July 8, 1933, in Clinton, Massachusetts, Leon lived a full and meaningful life marked by dedication to his family, career, community, and passions.

Leon graduated from Leominster High School as part of the Class of 1951. Shortly after, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard as an RM1 Radio Operator from 1952 to 1956. His time in the service was a source of pride throughout his life.

Professionally, Leon built a successful career in the trucking industry. He served as the General Manager of Shepard's Express in Leominster, MA and worked for several other trucking companies over the years as a sales executive. When he and Carol moved to Vermont in 1988, he served as the Head Custodian at the Sharon Academy. He and Carol also operated Beaver Meadow Herbs and Spices in Sharon, Vermont for over 32 years. His leadership and commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him.

Leon was deeply involved in his community and was a proud member of both the Masons for an impressive 70 years and the Shriners for 40 years. His dedication to these organizations reflected his values of service and fellowship.

Faith played an important role in Leon’s life. While living in Leominster, he was an active member of the North Leominster Congregational Church. Later, when he moved to Vermont, he joined the Sharon Congregational Church. At both churches, Leon and his wife Carol took on leadership roles and participated enthusiastically in church activities. He and Carol were also the founding members of the Sharon Food shelf.

Leon had a lifelong love for hunting and fishing. He especially cherished his annual trips to Allagash, Maine, with family and friends, where he found joy and tranquility in nature. A devoted sports fan, Leon followed all of Boston’s teams with enthusiasm. He and Carol enjoyed traveling with highlights including their trips to Alaska, New Mexico, and their cross-country bike trip from Seattle to Maine. He also enjoyed his time in the summer at Camp Wellville in Ashburnham, MA and they spent 40 winters at the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont, enjoying the views and cross-country skiing with friends and family.

Leon is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Carol (MacDonald) Sheldon of Auburn, MA; his daughter Lou-Ellen Corkum and her husband David of Charlton, MA; his son Scott Sheldon and his wife Christina of Newark, Delaware; and his son David Sheldon and his wife Kandi of East Dover, Vermont. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life.

He was predeceased by his parents Harold L. Sheldon and Blanche L. (Bissett) Sheldon as well as by his brothers Frank Sheldon, Leslie (Six Pack) Sheldon, and Philip R. Sheldon.

Leon’s memory will be cherished by all who knew him. May those who loved him find comfort in remembering the remarkable life he led. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Sharon Congregational Church, PO Box 42, Sharon, VT 05065. A Memorial Service will be held on Nov. 21st, at 10:00am in the Sharon Congregational Church, 90 VT-132, Sharon, VT 05065. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Cornwall, VT will be private.
