Southbridge: It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ms. Sylvia Maida (Chapdelaine) Checka, 78, of Southbridge.

Sylvia passed away November 16, 2022 at home surrounded by her loving family after a very long illness. Though our hearts are completely broken, we know that we will heal one day because of the love and strength that she provided to all of us.

Sylvia leaves behind her six loving children, Karin Checka of Southbridge, Kevin Checka of Southbridge, Joel Checka of Charlton, Jason Checka of Southbridge, Jonathan Checka and his spouse Jennifer Tenczar of Charlton, and Justin Checka of Southbridge; as well as her four beloved grandchildren, Brendan Baxter, Samantha Checka, Jason Checka Jr., and Dylan Checka; her brother, Ronald Chapdelaine and his wife Darlene of Sturbridge; and nephew and nieces,  Jeffrey Chapdelaine, Monique Chapdelaine, and Michelle Chapdelaine. Sylvia will also be missed tremendously by her very long-time friends, Donna Besse, Patty Lamontagne, and Dot McFarland and by her long-time companion, Alfred Dobson.  Her former husband, Ernest Checka, passed away in 2020.  Sylvia was born and raised in Southbridge the daughter of Adelard and Vivian (Capistrand) Chapdelaine. Sylvia graduated from Putnam Catholic Academy and worked at Rom's and Kahula Restaurants for many years while raising her family.

Sylvia enjoyed the beach, the casino, horse racing, traveling, reading, and dining out, but most of all cherished spending time with and caring for her beloved family.

A funeral Mass for Sylvia will be held on Monday, Nov. 21 ^st , at 11:00am in Notre Dame Church of the St. John Paul II Parish, 446 Main St., Southbridge.  Burial will follow in Old Notre Dame Cemetery, Southbridge.  There are no calling hours.
